TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Sukmawati Soekarnoputri held a press conference to deny allegations suggesting that she intended to defame Islam through her poem entitled `Ibu Indonesia` (Mother Indonesia).
“Representing myself, I would like to say that I had no intention to defame the Indonesian Muslim community through the poem Ibu Indonesia,” said Sukmawati at the Warung Daun Cikini in Jakarta today, April 4.
She felt the need to clarify the situation following allegations and the general response of her poem that she presented at the 29th anniversary of Anne Avantie Berkarya in the Indonesia Fashion Week.
Because of her poem that went viral, Sukmawati was reported to the police for blasphemy allegation by several organizations and groups.
However, Sukmawati defended that the poem was exhibited in the spirit of the event where it was heard; the event adopted the theme ‘cultural identity’. She said that the poem was crafted from her view as an artist and cultural expert.
“It was purely an Indonesian literature work,” she said.
Sukmawati Soekarnoputri also revealed that ‘Ibu Indonesia’ was one of many poems contained in a book of poetry collections published back in 2006. She asserted that it was her reflection of her concerns on the sense of nationality.
