Bombana Police Precinct in Southeast Sulawesi have arrested Ahmad Jumadil, 19, a resident of Rumbia Sub-district, for attempted arson at a church in Hombis at 7 PM local time on Sunday, September 18, 2016.
Bombana Police Precinct deputy chief Agung Basuki said Ahmad’s foolish attempt was reported by locals after they spot the ignition source inside the church.
“The evidence are a jerry can of kerosene and stacks of paper used to burn down the church,” Agung explained in Kendari on Monday, September 19, 2016.
Fire did not spread throughout the church because it was promptly put out by locals. Ahmad fled after the locals saw him making the attempted arson.
Agung added that the psychiatric unit of the Southeast Sulawesi Police was still examining the suspect’s mental state. Police are currently investigating the motive behind the church arson.
According to Agung, Hombis Church was not guarded, allowing the suspect to enter the house of prayer before attempting to burn down the structure. Ahmad Jumadil is currently under the Bombana Police custody, Agung said.
