Djarot Saiful Hidayat, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) central executive board’s membership and organization chairman, said the party will hold a meeting on 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.
“[The PDIP] will [tomorrow] hold a meeting to name a candidate and [discuss the] registration to the KPU [general election commission],” Djarot said at Jakarta City Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday, September 19, 2016.
Djarot said Jakarta is one of the PDIP central executive board’s top regions in regards to election. Therefore the party with a bull symbol will hold a special meeting tomorrow to decide whether or not it would nominate Ahok and Djarot pairing. Ahok and Djarot are current Jakarta governor and deputy governor.
The KPU will open registration for gubernatorial candidates and their respective running mate who run on a political party ticket from September 21 to 23, 2016. As of today, no gubernatorial candidate has registered.
Some political parties had only announced their gubernatorial candidate thus far. For example, Nasdem, Golkar and Hanura Parties had announced their endorsement of Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama. Whereas Gerindra Party had expressed support for Sandiaga Uno.
Both had yet to name their respective running mate. Djarot himself had been bandied about as Ahok’s running mate to lead Jakarta for another term.
