Legal team of non-active Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama mentioned that the religious blasphemy case charged against their client as a fabricated case. The even stated that the stance adopted by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) who declared Ahok had committed religious blasphemy was nothing but an act.
In response to the allegation, MUI Secretary General Amirsyah Tambunan stated that the statement was baseless. “We repeatedly stated that there is no political interest or any agendas related to MUI’s stance,” Amirsyah said on Thursday, January 12, 2017.
Amirsyah said that the stance expressed by the MUI in relation to the religious blasphemy allegedly committed by Ahok is only related to public interests. “What we did was to put stronger faith [in Muslim people] so that none of them doubts the Quran,” Amirsyah said.
Amirsyah said that the MUI also urged the public to respect the legal process currently ongoing. “Because Indonesia is a state of law, let the law progresses,” Amirsyah said.
In its statement, the MUI said that Ahok’s speech on the Surah Al Maidah verse 51 in the Thousand Island regency on September 2016 was a religious blasphemy. The MUI also stated that Ahok has humiliated ulemas who preached Surah Al Maidah.
