President Joko Widodo summoned four ministers to discuss the imports of salt for industry at the Presidential Palace here on Monday.
The president, also known also known by the portmanteau Jokowi, wanted an audience with Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution; Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita; Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti; and Industry Minister of Airlangga Hartarto.
Darmin Nasution said that Widodo asked for “further explanations on the implementation of salt import”.
According to Darmin, he had reported that salt import is only for industries and not for public consumption—based on volume need, with no exact quota determined.
He added that the policy is set to allow profitable prices at the farmers’ level.
“The President reminded that law enforcement officers need to monitor the import well to prevent the imported salt from entering the public’s market,” he said.
