It was estimated once that the trend of running in this country will be decreasing, but in fact there are still many running races being held in various cities in Indonesia. During July 2018 on every weekend there is always a running race. This week, on Sunday 8 July 2018, there was Desari 10K, a running race on the Desari (Depok-Antasari) toll road initiated by PT Citra Waspphutowa, a business entity that runs the Desari toll project, in cooperating with Idea Run as the Race Arrangement.
According to the director of the Desari toll project, Djoko Sapto, Desari 10K is dedicated for runners who have the honour to use roads and interchanges of Desari Toll Road to run before the 5.8 kilometer highway is inaugurated. The runners can enjoy the route of Desari toll road of Antasari-Depok which has been completed and ready to operate. In the coming weeks, this toll road will be officially opened for four-wheeled vehicles to support the smooth flow of traffic. With the support of the runners, a sense of togetherness to have this highway will be useful and utilized properly.
Participated by Overseas Runners
Desari 10K also provides 5K category. Foreign runners were also participating. Prize money is provided for the foreign runners who finish first in the 10K category for Rp 6 million and Rp 4 million at the 5K category for men and women. For national runners are provided prizes of Rp 5,500,000 for 10K and Rp 3,500.00 for 5K champions. In addition there is also a master category, runners aged over 40 years. The competition starts at 5:45 am after warming up together. The Race Director, Safrita Aryana, gave the speech and directions then continued with all participants, estimated at about 3000 people, singing national anthem Indonesia Raya before they went over the starting line.
Betawi Art and Culinary Treats
Starting from Antasari road, South Jakarta to Depok, West Java, the runners run down the Section I of Jakarta- Depok-Bogor toll road. This area is in a thick environment with Betawi culture so this event was also coloured by the typical Betawi festivity. There is Betawi art like ondel-ondel (giant puppets) which welcomed participants on the running track.
There were Betawi special culinary such as Dodol, a sweet toffee-like sugar palm-based confection and sticky, thick, and sweet. Also Bir Pletok or pletok beer, a herbs and spices-based beverage which has long been the traditional drink of choice in Betawi celebrations. All the food and drink can be bought and enjoyed in the finish area.
The Section II of the Desari toll road from Cinere area to Sawangan area is still in process. Residents are already waiting for the completion of this toll road project considering the severe congestion that often occurs in the border of Depok – South Jakarta should be addressed.
Support Government Programs
The runners enjoy the excitement of running on this new highway. Not long after the start, the runners were treated to beautiful sunrise views. As they approached the finish, there were interchanges that offer an impressive metropolitan view. Many runners no longer care about PB – Personal Best because they were busy taking pictures or making videos on the track. Among runners PB is so often spoofed into “a lot of photos”.
Andre Sinaga for example. The Sports event presenter on Kompas TV often stopped his running to pick up interesting spots along the track. “It’s so exciting to run on this new, cool highway. We don’t know when we can run here again,” he said, absorbed in perpetuating the interesting objects that existed, especially in the last three kilometers.
Same with Ervita Widiyastuti, a private employee who lives in the Semanggi area. She was busy photographing and asked to be photographed so she could exist in her Instagram. “This freeway is cool. Its construction that made traffic jams in months has paid off already. There were many great spot for taking photos. I was pleased and very satisfied to share the photos with my runners friends,” said Vita, her nickname.
Many running communities enliven this event. Indorunners, Run For Indonesia or RFI, Kompas Gramedia Pelari/Runners or KGP and Ciputat Runners were some of those running communities. A sense of togetherness among runners always appears in events like this. They support each other, not only among their communities but also across communities and across sectors. Desari 10K becomes part of the runners’ support for government programs in building a useful road facility for the community. The smoothness of traffic and the shorter distance will become very helpful for the people with the presence of this Desari toll road.
