Hundreds of thousands of people swamped downtown Tokyo on Friday (Oct 7) as Japanese medal winners from the Rio Olympics and Paralympics paraded through the capital.
Excited spectators cheered as dozens of medal-winning athletes waved from open-top double-decker buses bearing “Go! Tokyo” signs.
Organisers estimated 800,000 people turned out to watch the parade along its 2.5-kilometre (1.6 mile) route that cut through the glitzy Ginza shopping district.
Japan, which is preparing to host the summer Olympics in 2020, won 41 medals in the Rio Olympics, a record-high for the country, according to the Japanese Olympic Committee.
Its Paralympians took home 24 medals.
