Specialist police with Indonesia’s Densus 88 counter-terror unit have arrested Dwi Atmoko alias Abu Ibrahim (35) and Abu in Lampung, on the southern tip of the island of Sumatra.
They say Dwiatmoko is part of an extremist network linked to Bahrun Naim, who is fighting in Syria and has been using encrypted messages to urge his supporters to conduct attacks in Indonesia.
Police allege the network is responsible for anattack on a police station in July in the city of Solothat injured a police officer. Thirty-year-old Nur Rohman was killed by his own bomb in that attack.
Police spokesman Brigadier General Agus Riyanto said the arrested man was actively involved in the Solo attack.
“This group intended to have a terror attack in Bali, as well as what they did in Solo,” Brig Gen Riyanto said.
Police say another member of the group sent about $490 in cash to Dwiatmoko to pay for both attacks.
Another man linked to the group was arrested earlier in the week.
Brig Gen Riyanto did not provide any more detail about the Bali plot and said police were still investigating.
He said investigators searching Dwiatmoko’s home also found a small amount of white powder.
“After we conducted a lab test, we found that is triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a primary high-explosive substance.”
